A playthrough of Parker Brothers’ 1991 board game adaptation for the Nintendo Game Boy, Monopoly.

Played through a single-player game against three CPU-controlled opponents.

I’ve always thought that, no matter how much technology has improved over the years, that the NES version of Monopoly is about the best board-to-video game conversion ever. It streamlined all of the cumbersome elements of the physical game into a multiplayer party-style game with really charming presentation elements, awesome music, and an easy to use interface. It got it all right.

And, the Game Boy version is almost a direct port of the NES version! The lack of voices and a couple of graphics are about the only things that you might hold against this one over the console big-brother title.

In other words, it’s awesome. You can’t get better than this if you’re looking for board games on the Game Boy. Well, unless your handheld has an NES emulator on it with its version on Monopoly! 😉

  1. I'd totally buy it if it weren't for the horrible sound design. I just checked the GBC version and it sounds the same. Yikes.

  2. You know, this ain't bad. I'm impressed with the effort the developers put in here. Might just pick this up.

  3. I have an incredibly vivid memory of going to the punpkin patch one fall as a kid and playing this on the car ride there and back

  4. This is much better than I was expecting for sure. You are not wrong its almost a perfect conversion, one of the best NES-Gameboy ones I have ever seen. Doesn't matter how complex it is it seems even simple games didn't get converted perfectly most the time so it is impressive.

  5. While not by any means the best Monopoly video game it does get the job done it's pure monopoly nothing more and nothing less. I do own this game in both the original 1991 gray cart and the 1999 special color black cart. Why? you might ask? Because I was a dumb kid who didn't know they were the same game the only difference being that the 1999 version has added color.

  6. I used to own this game on GB when I was a kid and it's nice to see someone else play through it again after all these years. Keep up the good work, NintendoComplete!

  7. I just got done playing that game on my GB boy colour that has a backlit LCD screen which allowed me to play it in the dark and I did lose to that stupid computer.

  8. It's an almost perfect conversion of one of my all-time favorite NES games – if you enjoy board games in video game form, you really can't go wrong with this one!
